HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Puerto Galera is the oldest settlement in Mindoro. Even before it was founded by Juan De Salcedo in 1570, Puerto Galera was already a thriving settlement. The name Puerto Galera was derived from the galleons which used the bay as a refilling and repair station. It means "Port of Galleons", or in Spanish "Puerto de Galera". Another relic of Spanish significance is a wooden cross found on Muelle Beach. Engraved on March 18, 1897 with the Spanish epitaph "Ultima Tierra Que Pesaron Los Tripulantes del Canoneros Mariveles EL 18 de Noviembre de 1879".

PHYSICAL FEATURES

Puerto Galera is located 130 kilometers south of Manila and 14 nautical miles southwest of Batangas province. Its municipality consists of 13 barangays over a land area of 23,463 hectares. Its rugged topography, which is generally mountainous and crisscrossed by streams and rivers, is outlined by 42 kilometers of irregular shoreline rimmed with white sand beaches, coconut plantation and rocky cliffs penetrated by inland bays and coves.
